iDoo#6 / Why should you try to mix styles and create contrast? How to do it?

Why ?

Mixing styles in your home has multiple positive aspects. Firstly, it reflects the personalities and tastes of the “creator”. Since this kind of people tends to look for something different, it offers amazing interior full of unexpected items, artworks and ancient pieces of furniture. It gives a strong personality to a space and a total feeling of uniqueness.

It creates contrast. It might seem like nothing, but contrast is one of the key point of interior design and decoration. For example, you can highlight two elements just by putting them together. A piece of wood will never look nicer than when it’s assembled with glass. It creates contrasts – materials, colors, fragility, and modernity, the fact that one is industrialized and the other is natural… The shiny aspect of the glass will give the wood an even more rustic feel, and at the opposite, the glass will look like crystal.

We are talking about materials here because it is the simplest example, but it is applicable to everything. If you take a mid-century modern chair and you put it together with a table made of concrete, it works too; these two elements will highlight each other.

We’d like to share another point which sounds more theoretical, but true to our eyes. Mixing styles makes you use different materials, different colors and different shapes. It creates variation, and from a cultural point of view variation is richness. Because when there is a difference between two things, you need to make them work together, you need to find a solution and you create something new, you become an inventor. When something is dark you enlighten it, when something is rough, you make it smoother, etc… So from two separate elements, you create a new combination and you extend the possibilities. Every single time you do it, you enrich your interior.

Variation leads to invention, innovation, and knowledge. Look at history, the renaissance, followed by the baroque period, the classic period, the romantic period… Each of these variations lead to new artistic currents, architecture, philosophy…

Well, we could go a long way, this is applicable to almost everything, and this is definitely applicable to your interior.
